#BeThe1To ASK

I wish I had known to ask Rader the question: Are you thinking of suicide? I believed the myth that talking openly about suicide could put ideas in a person’s head.
•
But studies show that asking at-risk individuals if they are suicidal does not increase suicides or suicidal thoughts. In fact, studies say the opposite: findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce, rather than increase, suicidal ideation.
•
If you aren't sure how to bring it up, the Jed Foundation and Ad Council collaborated on an excellent series of conversation starters and videos called Seize the Awkward. Check them out for ideas.
•
Be the one to ASK.

If you think someone might be considering suicide, take the first step and #BeThe1To ask. Ask directly, “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” If you don’t know how to start the conversation, check out https://t.co/w4yURakndM.@800273TALK #SPM19 #SuicidePreventionMonth pic.twitter.com/aTM7YvVLcb
