tool can help save college students' lives
With news yesterday of an apparent suicide on my college student's campus, it's time to share ULifeline (a great online resource for college mental health) and the Self Evaluator again. From the ULifeline website:
"The Self Evaluator was developed for ULifeline by Duke University School of Medicine and screens for thirteen of the most common mental health conditions that college students face. This screening does not provide a diagnosis, but identifies problems that could be impacting thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The screening process also provides information on these conditions and how to reach out for help."
The student taking the free screening enters the name of their school, so they will be directed to the appropriate local resources.
ULifeline is a free service for colleges and universities and is supported by The Jed Foundation - JED, a nonprofit public charity whose mission is to prevent suicide among college students and enhance mental health support on campuses nationwide.

storycorps: memories move us forward
I’ve talked about StoryCorps here before. Its mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. Whether you’re familiar with it or not, do yourself a favor and spend a little time today poking around the website and listening. (There are also animated videos of many of the interviews, and a podcast.)
If you’re short on time, I’d like to point you in a specific direction. Their initiative called Road to Resilience: Memories that Move Us Forward “leverages the power of stories and storytelling to help children cope with the death of a parent, sibling, or loved one.” It provides a beautiful way for children to explore their grief over losing a loved one and preserve their memories of that cherished person.
honoring Connor Ball and his legacy
Honoring Connor Ball today on his birthday. Connor died by suicide in 2011. His foundation does great suicide prevention work in New Hampshire, and the reach of his legacy extends far beyond their state borders. Check it out on their Facebook page and website.
“Today is Connor’s birthday, he would be 22. I know he’s watching down on all of us, proud that we are working together to save lives. Today, in his memory, check on a friend, be kind to a stranger or just acknowledge to yourself how awesome you are. You never know what someone else might be going through, and one random act of kindness could be just what they need.” — from their Facebook post

spreading hope
Losing her dad to suicide "launched me on this trajectory of wanting to do things that matter to people and have positive output to what I created with my artwork and writing," Nicole Leth, now 26, told TODAY. "I realized over the years I could never save someone’s life for them, but I could create an encouraging and affirmative space to empower them to save their own life."
luigi loves his piranha plant
Happy Mario Monday! I’m a little obsessed right now with the way my Mario friends take care of their plants. This time, it’s Luigi looking after his piranha plant! I love @luisventura_05’s Instagram toy photography, his attention to detail, and the way he composes his scenes.

s'mores day: oh, the cuteness!
Today is S’mores Day, and because I think looking at things that are cute and make you smile is good for your mental health, I’m sharing this adorable Toasted Dragon-mallow from dragon sculptress Becca Golins of @dragonsandbeasties! No, it’s not edible (made with polymer clay), but is too darling to bite into, anyway. Rader loved marshmallows and would have appreciated this little guy! If you have a minute, browse through all the cuteness Becca is posting!
