there's a new world coming

I went to bed last night with these hopeful words in my head, from the song “New World Coming,” by Mama Cass Elliot, one of my favorite musicians. I slept peacefully, and all the way through to 7 a.m.! I love this beautiful song. The full lyrics are below. Be sure to go listen; the 1970 video is on YouTube. (There’s also a haunting Nina Simone cover version from the following year.)

There's a New World Coming
And it's just around the bend
There's a new world coming
This one's coming to an end

There's a new voice calling
You can hear it if you try
And it's growing stronger
With each day that passes by

There's a brand new morning
Rising clear and sweet and free
There's a new day dawning
That belongs to you and me

Yes a new world's coming
The one we've had visions of
Coming in peace,
Coming in joy,
Coming in love

I slept peacefully last night with the hopeful lyrics of this beautiful song on my mind: “New World Coming” by Mama Cass Elliot, one of my favorite musicians. Be sure to go listen! #newworldcoming #peacejoylove https://t.co/R1cQBGwLVu pic.twitter.com/ThVRoCrK43

#MarioMonday, #halloweencostume edition! Rader as #Mario in 2009, age 8, and Toad in 2010. #Halloween was his favorite holiday, and it’s still rough for us from a #grief perspective. For #griefsupport, check out the resources and book recommendations at https://t.co/OZMStSgimA. pic.twitter.com/sPu98wC7Vi

— Rader Ward Foundation (@RaderWardFound) October 26, 2020

Rader was Mario for Halloween in 2009 when he was 8 years old. So cute! Then the next year, he dressed up as Toad!

Halloween has always been one of our top holidays as a family. It definitely was Rader’s favorite — he even had a Halloween-carnival-themed birthday party (in June) the year he turned 5.

So we have struggled every year with this season since losing him. Seeing young families out together trick-or-treating is rough for us now. We turn off the porch light and don’t participate, and we try to distract ourselves with a movie.

Grief hits in all kinds of ways. Some you can predict (like this one, now — although that first year, the tidal wave of Halloween walloped us out of the blue). If you’re grieving and need support, there are some helpful resources and book recommendations at raderward.com/mentalhealth.
