Mario Monday: enamel pins!

Quick links to my earlier posts about the 8-bit pin and the Naolito drawing.

#MarioMonday! This week my #villainsneedlove pin from @Naolito arrived. Such a cute addition to my collection, joining the #8bitart one from Oldisme, who sells on Etsy, and the #Mario and #PrincessPeach ones that came with #PaperMario #OrigamiKing. ❤️💙💛 #enamelpins #marioart pic.twitter.com/afhIbJaY8R

book rec: the stoic challenge

Listen to Minimizing Pain, Maximizing Joy here.

So glad I heard an interview Dec.14 on @HiddenBrain with the author of this book, William B Irvine (episode title: Minimizing Pain, Maximizing Joy). Even just the first chapter is helping me reframe some intensely difficult life developments right now. Listen and then #read! pic.twitter.com/FZbWs6DBoD

it's going to be ok

Always an #optimist, I believe #itsgoingtobeok. As a mom who lost a child to suicide, I surely know sometimes things are not at all ok. But I can attest my life continues to be #worthliving, and even in hard times I have moments of #joy (new dog helps)! 🎨 dancingbananagirldesign pic.twitter.com/Npm3CiIAUu

Mario Music Monday, like you've never heard

Happy #MarioMonday! Here’s @Polygon’s Ana Diaz/@Pokachee writing about a new take on the #SuperMarioWorld score (and also the best use of “unprecedented” I’ve seen in a while, as this time it’s not related to the pandemic!). Links to both the old and new music for you to compare. https://t.co/AiQxQoYaME

pandemic isolation can be a life and death struggle

Quick link to the Twitter thread I mentioned.

This article from NBC’s @echuckles is uncomfortable to read, but makes some important points and offers several helpful links. Check out her Twitter for a thread about the article and the topic of #pandemicsuicide. #suicideprevention #teenmentalhealth https://t.co/x6MPTnqHPG

let go of what you can't control

All you can do is all you can do. There are things you want to make happen that despite your best efforts you simply can’t, because you only control yourself, not other people. If something is outside of your influence, recognize it and be ok with that. https://t.co/M8AM0D1fLN pic.twitter.com/T7JVZ78LXw

— Rader Ward Foundation (@RaderWardFound) February 6, 2021

I expect a lot from myself; it’s true. And there are days, like yesterday, when that works to my detriment, because quite honestly there are some things you can’t make happen, however much you try. You only really have control over yourself. Maybe you have good skills, good instincts, good judgment, good ideas, and still your influence only extends so far. Either you accept its limitations willingly, or you can be upset about it, but either way, the thing you’re trying to accomplish might not come to pass.

I don’t mean to be cryptic. My mom was in the hospital and is now in a rehab place to get strong enough to move back to her continuing care community. But before she can go back home, the two agencies need to talk to each other, and I have exhausted all my avenues of trying to force this to happen. One side (the place she is now) is making all the effort and the other side is not making any. (Please do not offer suggestions of things I should try or should have tried; those won’t be helpful to me at this time).

After I broke down over my perceived failure at the end of the business day yesterday, my husband suggested I should talk to my sister, who said all the exactly-right things and made me feel SO much better. So the secondary lesson is to lean on your support people when you need support. That’s kind of the point of having a “village.”

I think you guys are awesome, and I hope my pain can save you from some of your own. Thank you to Instagrammer @tutu_mora for stating this so beautifully.

Posted @withregram • @tutu_mora: “There is a time and place for doing more than what is asked of us, for going the extra mile...many of us wouldn’t be where we are if we simply floated through life or someone had not gone above and beyond for us. But it’s so important (at least some of the time) to give ourselves permission to simply show up as is.”

doing your best is enough

I really needed this reminder today from @thisfeelsniceee. Earlier I felt like I was failing on multiple fronts. But I’m doing my best; I didn’t give up and made some progress, and I feel at least a little better now. The best you can do is enough! #thisfeelsnice #tinyhope pic.twitter.com/1uKtbBY9SA
