listen: california love on 99pi

I can not recommend this episode enough! And I can’t wait to listen to the rest of #CaliforniaLove by @WTHDZ. Great storytelling shows you what you have in common with folks even when their lives seem VERY different from yours. You won’t regret taking time for this one! #99pi https://t.co/QdBIxyiAfV

The succinct version: Listen to this podcast episode of 99 Percent Invisible! I heard it while driving today and it kept me riveted the whole time, and went in a direction I did not expect but did very much resonate with. Everyone is fighting something, and expression through art is therapeutic.

The long version: I am a podcast superfan. They’re pretty much all I listen to when I’m driving, taking a walk, doing housework, etc., and that’s been true for years and years. I think 99PI might be the first podcast I ever heard, and I still vividly remember my first episode: The Sound of Sport. (Take a listen! So interesting.)

This one is not an original 99PI episode. It’s one host Roman Mars shared from another series. It’s 42 minutes long, so it is an investment of time. But even though graffiti is not a topic I relate to, and the lives of the people in the story are very different from mine, I felt a genuine commonality with them by the end.

Now I’m looking forward to listening to the rest of the episodes in the California Love series.

Humanity! That’s why I recommend it.

try these 5-minute stress resets

Good stuff today from Jenny Taitz at The American Institute of Stress. I particularly like the first two suggestions. My go-to choice for soothing music lately has been a piece called Worry Free from Yuval Ron on Insight Timer, but I also enjoyed to the one the story links to, from Marconi Union. And the second suggestion, you'll have to read it, and then maybe try it, to believe it! It's a practically foolproof way to reset if your stress is spiraling.

(Here’s a YouTube link to if you want to try it ‘along with’ psychologist Ursula Whiteside of Now Matters Now, who will walk you through the steps and demonstrate.)

Good stuff from @drjennytaitz! Try suggestion two for a practically foolproof way to reset if your stress is spiraling. ❤️💙💛 #stressrelief #pandemiclife #dbt #inthistogether #anxietytips https://t.co/ljq8JYy0C2

It’s Mario Mushroom Monday! Take a look at our fabulous fungi!
🍄
In photo 1, clockwise: first the blue Mini Mushroom candy tin from @_bostonamerica, Mega Mushroom plush (@banpresto_global?), unofficial 1-up Mushroom coin bank, unofficial Super Mushroom table lamp, little Super Mushrooms from @knex and Subarudo, and Bee Mushroom and Spring Mushroom, introduced in Super Mario Galaxy!
🍄
Photos 2 and 3: 1UP Mushroom trucker cap (2010) and New Super Mario Bros mushroom cap (2006); Perler bead Magic Mushroom as it appeared in Super Mario Bros.
🍄
Photos 4 and 5, a Chance Cube (like the one in Super Mario Galaxy 2) that Rader made for his board games, featuring a 1UP Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Power Star; and Bowser, three 1UPs, and a coin. The cube inside is magnetic.

And in the final pic, my new glass lampwork earrings from @thinkkitsetsy! They’re so cute and I can’t wait to show them off!

celebrate relaxation day (calmly!)

I am all in on #RelaxationDay! (🎨 by @sandra_boynton )
😊
I taught my indoor rowing class this morning at Greenville Indoor Rowing, and now I am sitting by the lake again, watching the rain, with no further plans! If you have too much to do to relax *all* day, at least take a few moments to stop and breathe.
😔
Close your eyes and scan your body. Where are you tense? What muscles can you consciously soften? Are you holding on to any thoughts or ideas that aren’t serving you? See if you can let them go, like clouds floating by. (Many thanks to the delightful Laura Caylor for teaching me these simple relaxation tools in 🧘🏻‍♀️ yoga class!)

Happy #RelaxationDay! What can you do today to consciously #relax? How about stop, #takeabreak, close your eyes, #breathe. #LetGo. Thanks to @SandyBoynton for the 🎨. pic.twitter.com/uaW2fXjDcN

same here global: changing the conversation

Here’s another mental health resource for you!  is a movement that seeks to change the global conversation through mental health advocacy. They understand that each of us is not either mentally healthy or mentally ill, but that all of us exist on a continuum (light switch vs. dimmer switch illustration, photo 2). Visit their Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and especially their website to learn more and see the tools they have available to help you (and all of us)! I’ve added Same Here to the resources page, and the Rader Ward Foundation has become a member of the Same Here movement! #samehere🤙

Mario Monday: hey it's the heywoods!

Bowser Jr is tired of being bossed around at home! He runs away and meets characters from Animal Crossing! ------ Be sure to check out all our Super Mario Ho...

#MarioMonday! This week I learned about YouTube channel #thesupermariohouse, where the Heywood family is making fun videos for kids. (I say for kids but I loved it too!) Storylines have some clever twists. In this one, #BowserJr runs away from home. https://t.co/6CM2c6H93Z pic.twitter.com/Oxk1HpmjqR

Happy Mario Monday! This week I learned about @thesupermariohouse. The Heywood family has a YouTube channel making fun Mario videos for kids. I say for kids, but I watched episode 55 after going back to their first video for a little background, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The storyline was fun and included some clever twists. It’s a great mix of homemade environments and purchased or maybe sponsored toys. (Swipe to see: my favorite photo from the collection is the one of Bowser Jr.’s messy room with the pizza and video games.)
🍄
Then the second half of the video is all shout-outs to kids who have sent in artwork, photos, and videos of their own Super Mario houses and collections. So many kids around the world who love Mario like Rader and our family! Check out @thesupermariohouse. Thanks, Heywoods!
