reduce stress with intentional breathing
I saw this post about intentional breathing techniques shared by @loveislouder in their quest to #amplifymelanatedvoices. Swipe through and follow along with one of the short videos from Meagan McIntosh of @thementalhealthtapes.
🖤
Here’s what she says about them: “Feeling tense? Let’s talk about breathing!💨
“I have found intentional breathing extremely helpful in calming myself when I am feeling super stressed. There are so many different breathing techniques that can help you recenter yourself. For me, I like to use a version of square breathing during a particularly tough moment. I suggest going on YouTube to find a breathing meditation.

trying to listen and learn
Here’s another great message and a list of excellent resources from Dr. Shanté Cofield, @themovementmaestro on Instagram. (Some are more specific to movement professionals, but many are broader.) I’m trying to listen and learn.

“I wasn’t ready.
“Perhaps some of you weren’t ready either. Maybe you’re still not ready. Here’s the silver lining, the teachers are everywhere, waiting for you to be ready. And no, I’m not assigning jobs to folks who are under no obligation to help you. Anything and everything can be a teacher. It’s all out there waiting for you.

“No, I haven’t read 2839437 books. Honestly, I don’t really like reading books. But I do enjoy using social media as an entry point for things to dive deeper into. I do enjoy listening to individual podcast episodes. I do enjoy reading one-off articles on the interwebs. I do enjoy Googling things and doing my best to puzzle through them. I do enjoy webinars and pretty much anything digital. So that’s what I’ve done.
“The point of this post? Keep your 👀 , your ❤️ , and your 🧠 open.

SMG playlist sets the Mario Monday mood
Today is Mario Monday, and as always we are remembering Rader, who loved Mario the most.
This second week of June is an especially hard one for our family, between June 7 when he died by suicide at the age of 15, and June 13, his birthday (he should be turning 19 this Saturday). As I was thinking about what I wanted to post today, I went looking for music from Super Mario Galaxy, our family favorite Mario game.
Here's a sweet playlist of #SuperMarioGalaxy music (including some from Super Mario Galaxy 2), compiled by YouTuber Yoonchiya, which she describes as "good for studying, sleeping, crying, etc." I agree. It's a great mix of calming and poignant, and perfect as I'm reflecting on Rader's life today.
Yoonchiya curates playlists from video game soundtracks. This is her second Super Mario Galaxy one. You can find the other and much more on her YouTube channel. Thank you, Yoonchiya!
Yoonchiya kindly shared today’s Facebook post with her own followers. Here’s what she said:
Three years ago, we lost a fellow gamer and Super Mario Galaxy lover to suicide. The Rader Ward Foundation, led by Rader's mother in his memory, reached out to me about posting my SMG playlist on the anniversary. We talked, exchanged our experiences a bit, and in the process I discovered what an amazing foundation it is.
The Rader Ward Foundation is an organization dedicated to suicide prevention, providing mental health and grief support resources, and even gives out scholarships to children in need to attend Montessori schools. It's chock-full of info and, honestly, very heartwarming just to visit. Here is their website: www.raderward.com/
You can support them by liking their Facebook page (original post) or Instagram at www.instagram.com/RaderWardFoundation/
I'm not very good at writing about these things, but I tried my best!
On my SMG playlists, especially, I've noticed many lonely souls writing about how Mario and other games like these are their refuge. Some people post very emotional comments, and I wish I could be there for each and every one of you.
However, no matter what, I'm so proud of the loving and supportive community these videos have attracted. Not only the composers of this music, but all of you who listen, are making this world a better place <3

remembrance on chocolate ice cream day
June 7 is the day Rader died. It’s been three years, which feels like both a lifetime and just yesterday. Today we are celebrating Rader’s life by observing National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, which is a holiday he would have wholeheartedly embraced.
🍦
Today in Rader’s memory, will you take the time to savor something you enjoy? Eat something delicious, or do something fun, and think of him. Say his name out loud. To Rader. For Rader.
still more resources, for and by minority communities
more black mental health resources
resources: because black mental health matters
movement maestro: strong body, strong mind
I had the opportunity yesterday to learn about some resources I hadn’t seen before, when many of the folks I already followed chose to amplify the voices of people of color. One I am happy to have heard about is @themovementmaestro, Dr. Shanté Cofield. Strictly speaking, she’s not a mental health resource, but I think when you look at the whole picture of how integrated our mental and physical health are, what she has to say is certainly relevant! Please take a look. Watch a couple of her short videos. (I took to heart what she has to say about push-ups!)
